| SAFETY PLAN WHILE LIVING IN VIOLENCE
If an abusive situation seems unavoidable, go to a room or area with an exit, not in the bathroom, kitchen, garage or anywhere near dangerous instruments or weapons.
When you expect you and the abuser are going to have an argument, try to move to a space that is lowest risk, such as _________________.
Practice how to get out of your home safely. Identify which windows, elevator, fire escapes or stairs would be best.
If you decide to leave in a hurry, you will leave by _______________________________.
Identify a neighbor you can tell about the violence and ask to call the police if a disturbance is heard coming from your home.
You can tell ________________ about the violence and request they call the police if they hear suspicious noises coming from your house.
Devise a code word to use with your children, family, friends, and neighbors when you need the police. Make sure they know the word and what they should do if you use it.
You will use ________________ as your code for my children or my friends so they can call for help.
Teach your children how to use the telephone to contact the police and the fire department. Let them practice with the button down on the telephone.
Keep my money and car keys ready and hide them in (place) _________________ in order to leave quickly.
If you have to leave your home, go _________________________. (Decide this even if you don't think there will be a next time).
Plan B: If you cannot go to the location above, then go to ______________ or _______________.
Teach some of these strategies to your children, if you think they can understand them.
If you choose to use a weapon, you will take classes to learn how to use it and follow all safety precautions. Prepare to keep your children safe from the weapon at all times.
Use your judgment and intuition. If the situation is very serious, give my partner what he wants to calm him down. You need to protect myself until you are out of danger. Then, call the police as soon as it is safe to do so.
I will always keep a
cell phone with me. All cell phones can call 911.
I will keep this document in a safe place and out of the reach of my potential attacker. Review date:_________________________
